TMJ Diagnosis & Treatment | Alexandria VA
How TMJ Disorder is Diagnosed
Along with a thorough health history, we perform a comprehensive exam, appropriate special x-rays, range of motion testing, jaw tracking, and other diagnostics as appropriate. We will discuss the onset, duration and intensity of pain and may address stress and nutritional issues. This all helps us arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Patients go from doctor to doctor in their quest to find answers to their headaches and other symptoms. Our office finds the answers!
Our treatment philosophy is conservative and non-surgical for TMD, head, neck and facial pain.
Dr. Singer treats patients with a structural/neurological concept. This kind of dentistry for TMD evaluates the complex relationship between the teeth, jaw joints and the masticatory muscles in order to achieve a correct occlusion and reach the optimal treatment goal: No pain, better function. We may also use selected, various treatments such as:
- Custom orthotics
- Alpha Stim
- Low Level Laser Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Stress Management
- Nutritional Counseling
- Behavior Modification
- Self-Help Information
- Nutritional supplements
- Cranio Sacral Therapy
- Sacro Occipital Therapy
- Spray & Stretch
- Trigger point injections
- Nutrition counseling or referral
- Jaw, Head and Neck Exercises
- Stress Reducing Tips
A custom fitted orthotic is the most suggested form of treatment. This is because an orthotic helps eliminate muscle spasms and pains which occur with bite imbalances. It also stabilizes the TM joints. The purpose of the orthotic is to balance the bite so the teeth, muscles and joints all work in harmony — without strain or pain. At times, Dr. Singer may suggest supplemental care by referrals to other health professionals. Each case is individual and some may require various modes of treatment.
…is important to the success of your treatment. For instance, there are things you can do to help your condition until you can get into the office for an appointment or even to use between appointments, such as:
- Decreasing your stress level
- Getting stress counseling
- Applying heat for sore muscles/cold to swollen areas
- Beginning a healthy exercise program
- Avoiding gum chewing or eating crunchy, chewy foods
- Eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding inflammatory and sugary foods

Physical problems can be caused by stress: avoid smoking and caffeine. You will experience problems like headaches, clenching/grinding teeth or tense neck muscles. Over a period of time, teeth surfaces begin changing with the pressure of grinding and clenching. If stress is uncontrolled, it can result in a mental breakdown, nervousness, illness, etc. When your stress threshold is reached it causes some parts of the body to malfunction. Is it any wonder that 85% of hospitals today are filled with stress-related disorders like heart attacks, strokes, stomach disorders, asthma and chronic pain?
Being mindful and tracking events, people, activities, etc., that cause your stress will help you to begin to better manage your stress levels. Consult with a minister or stress counselor to get support and/or to discover management techniques. This will bring your attention to stressors and things you can do to help yourself. Try to incorporate music, laughter, exercise and fun into each day.
